Inmates denounce the lack of medicines

Tijuana.- The complaints continue for lack of medical attention and medicines within the social rehabilitation center located in the town of Hongo, in Tecate, and people who are serving sentences say they wait up to 18 hours to receive medical attention.

Luis, an inmate who preferred to omit his full name, declared that the coronavirus health crisis has worsened the health system inside the prisons in Baja California.

“Until one in the morning for him to inject me, I was waiting from seven in the morning to one in the morning. They don’t have a regular doctor here to give us care, when he comes he is a nurse and he doesn’t do anything to you ”, said the desperate man.

Luis mentioned that the medical crisis has affected his physical and mental health, since the shortage of psychiatric medicine has made him mentally unstable and assured that after 13 years of being hospitalized in the Hongo serving a sentence, it is the worst shortage of clonazepam medicine to treat your psychiatric conditions.

“I have not been able to sleep well and sometimes I have seizures because I cannot sleep well, it is a little of everything and it is not only because of the medicine, but the medical attention right now with the Covid, there is not.”

He assured that the Cereso inmates have sent letters to the Human Rights Commission, but their requests are not heard, they ask for the intervention of the state governor Jaime Bonilla. “I no longer want this citizen demand to reach the governor’s hands and for them to find a solution,” he said.

For several months they have denounced that food is rationed and scarce, but their problems are not solved “The food is pure slop, it is a minimal portion, which in reality is now just to keep us alive, but it is not nutritious, we are left with hunger, they don’t give us vitamins and they don’t let us put in anything ”.

Luis made the complaint to El Sol de Tijuana through a phone call from inside Cereso, he asked for help from his sister Laura, a woman who approached reporters from the newspaper, but they ask for anonymity, as they assure that they are punished when they make these complaints with confinements in punishment cells, activities are prohibited or food rations are taken away.

“They take a lot of retaliation against them, right now they do not prohibit visits because right now they are prohibited, but they take away their activities or give them less food or they have more milk and pretexts to punish them”, denounced his sister Laura, who also asked for the anonymity.
