Initially wanted by Emmanuel Macron for before the summer, the foundations of psychiatry and mental health are postponed to “next September” so that “preparatory work” continues “throughout the summer”, announced this Tuesday, June 15, the Ministry of Health in a press release.
“Faced with the success of the consultation” and “the wish expressed by many organizations to be able to formulate proposals beyond this consultation”, “the preparatory work will continue throughout the summer and the meetings will be held next September”, specified the ministry.
Consultation open to all French people
In early December, four renowned psychiatrists and a psychoanalyst called on the government to “take action” urgently so that all French people who need it can access psychiatric care, while the Covid-19 health crisis is increasing needs. A month earlier, Olivier Véran, Minister of Health, had assured that the government wanted “at all costs avoid a third wave, which would be that of mental health”.
Emmanuel Macron had therefore approved in mid-January, during a videoconference with child psychiatrists, the holding before the summer of “meetings of psychiatry and mental health”, with an axis dedicated to children in order to improve access to child psychiatric care.

Since then, the government has launched a consultation open to all French people to “bring up needs, proposals for development, solutions for the future of the sector”.
According to the ministry, this consultation “collected nearly 15,000 responses” and “a dedicated generic address, [email protected] has been opened”, “many organizations” having wished “be able to formulate proposals beyond this consultation”, specified the ministry.
