INIA specialist delivers recommendations to face adverse weather events in livestock – Diario Lanco

Alfredo Torres, researcher at INIA Remehue, explained that one of the technologies with the greatest impact is the fertilization of grasslands. He also recommended preparing ahead of time by planting supplemental crops such as cabbage, rutabaga, and beet for the winter and alfalfa, rape, chicory, and seven veins for the summer.

A series of recommendations to face adverse climatic events in livestock, gave the researcher specialist in grasslands and crops of INIA Remehue, Alfredo Torres, in an online talk organized by the Seremía de Agricultura de la Región de Los Lagos, within the framework of the cycle #MoreCampo #MinagriLosLagos.

In his presentation, the INIA expert explained that “One of the technologies with the greatest impact to face adverse effects on forage production, both biotic and abiotic, is the fertilization of grasslands, which allows us to obtain a greater amount of forage at low cost.”

Added that “In the months of June and July we must plan the critical periods for next year, not only the winter, but also the summer. Let us remember that, as a result of climate change, in the last 10 years, we have had summers as dry as the present one on 8 occasions, therefore, preserved forage, silage and bales should be considered, also for the summer, along with sowing supplementary crops. such as alfalfa, forage raps, chicory and seven veins among others. For the winter, the most common alternatives are forage cabbages, rutabaga and forage beets ”.

He also highlighted that “Other important aspects to consider at this time are pests, white worms are already attacking our meadows and at the end of May we will have black cuncunillas in mind.” Finally, it was recalled “to keep the drainage in perfect working order and to properly manage the animals and the meadows when we have frost.”

In this regard, the Seremi of Agriculture of the Los Lagos Region, Eduardo Winkler pointed out that “The occurrence of adverse weather events in livestock in our area is increasingly frequent and we must be prepared, that is why as the Ministry of Agriculture, we wanted to share some technical recommendations through this talk.”

In addition, he recalled that currently in three provinces of the region we are in an Agricultural Emergency situation, which was declared by the Minister of Agriculture, María Emilia Undurraga, in order to provide aid to livestock producers, especially peasant family agriculture , through INDAP ”.

This activity had 70 participants, including dairy and livestock producers, private and INDAP technical advisers, teachers and students from agricultural high schools, among others.
