Inga Jurova: Painting the Cultural and Historical Situation of Forštát and Beyond

“Only in Venice and Maskačka can you paint everything in a row”, says the artist. With the cycle of works dedicated to Forštát, the artist wants to emphasize the special cultural and historical situation of this district, draw attention to the positive development trends of the neighborhood and dispel stereotypes about the degraded and criminogenic environment.

The second part of the exhibition consists of a cycle of travel impressions – Portugal, the French Riviera, Venice, Liepāja… Personal observation is also important in these works, avoiding the depiction of tourist objects, but showing the peculiarities of a foreign environment, which have been perceived by a traveler with a fresh eye, i.e. a stranger’s point of view.

Inga Jurova represents the direction of magical realism in painting. When painting realistic motifs, the artist is interested in the metaphysical content of things hidden behind the external form. He is fascinated by the situation depicted in his works, likes to include figures in landscapes.

Inga Jurova was born in Riga on March 16, 1972. Since 1996, she has been participating in art projects as a painter and curator, and has also organized several solo exhibitions. Educated at the Latvian Academy of Arts (LMA) – in 1998 she graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2000, she obtained a master’s degree in art and specialized in painting and graduated from the painting workshop of Aleksej Naumov and Kaspar Zariņš.

In 2020, Inga Jurova won the Ęedert Elias Award for the representation of rural themes in contemporary painting at the Ęedert Elias Prize competition exhibition at the Ęedert Elias Jelgava Museum of History and Art.
