The new informateur Remkes is confident that the parties in the formation will eventually find each other and step over their own shadows. “But it is not an easy assignment and there is no guarantee of success,” he said in a brief explanation after Chamber President Bergkamp officially handed him his assignment.
The House wants the experienced VVD member to investigate whether a minority cabinet can be formed from a combination of VVD, D66 and CDA that has yet to be determined. Remkes said that not only do the views of the parties differ, but that the relationships also have to grow.
Feeling of irritation
Remkes said that patience is being tested in politics and in society. He added that he saw “with some annoyance that the process was coming to a dead end”. He emphasized that not he, but the parties themselves should do it.
He hopes to be able to work quickly, but he pointed out that the formation has yet to start. “At times the image of a procession from Echternach came to my retina,” he said, referring to the three steps forward, two backwards associated with that procession.
