Inflation Limits Entertainment Options for Colombians: Bogotá Leads in Transactions for Events and Movies

Bogotá — Inflation in Colombia has been in double digits for more than a year and that means that the resources that households have allocated to areas such as entertainment are limited.

During 2022, Colombians carried out more than 100,000 transactions in entertainment activities, with going to the movies and attending events such as concerts or mass events being their main choices, according to Nu.

Bogotá is the city where the largest number of transactions dedicated to events are carried out. The capital leads with more than 86 thousand movements in the last two years, which represents 45.1% of the total.

Movie outings represented a total expense that exceeds $7 billion pesos while events accumulated a figure of more than $20 billion. These data show the relevance that being part of entertainment and leisure activities has for Colombians.

An x-ray of the regions

In the period between January 2021 and 2023, a total of 192,729 transactions were carried out, showing that, in the 32 departments, from San Andrés Islands to the Amazon, at least one transaction has been carried out for entertainment purposes.

Although Bogotá leads in the category with the largest number of movements, Antioquia, Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca also stand out, since in these departments a large number of transactions were registered for activities such as trips to the movies, concerts, fairs and bazaars.

Occupying second place, Antioquia registered a total of 35,285 transactions, which is equivalent to 18.3% of the total. For its part, Cundinamarca contributed with 11,862 transactions, while Valle del Cauca contributed 11,531.

In contrast, Guainía, Vaupés and Vichada were the departments with the fewest transactions destined for entertainment activities, with an average of 8 movements in the last two years.
