Infection tracing for monkey pox in Oslo

The infected person is a traveling person from a European country, where there is an outbreak of monkey pox, the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) states.

– The person in question visited Oslo 6. – 10. May and had symptoms during the stay, but was only diagnosed after returning home, FHI writes in a press release.

Oslo Municipality is now working with FHI to map who may have been exposed to infection, in order to provide information to those concerned.

Close contacts are contacted

FHI is also in contact with the health service in the person’s home country, to further map where the person has been during their stay in Oslo.

Any close contacts of the infected person will be contacted and asked to be observant of monkey pox symptoms..

The most common symptoms are fever and general malaise followed by rash and swelling of the lymph nodes.

– Not unexpected

– It is not unexpected that people infected with monkey pox have been to Norway, and the health service must be prepared for that, says chief physician Preben Aavitsland at the National Institute of Public Health.

– Do you think there is an infection in Oslo now?

– We are very unsure of that. It depends a bit on what activities the person in question has done in Oslo, says Aavitsland to TV 2.

This is what FHI and Oslo Municipality are now working on mapping.

– If the person in question has had any close contacts, for example sexual partners in Oslo, then it can be an infection, he says.

Can be transmitted through bedding

Infection most often occurs by direct contact infection, but indirect contact infection and droplet infection can occur.

Indirect contact transmission can, for example, be via bedding. In order for droplet infection to occur, close close contact over a longer period of time is usually required. According to FHI, these are hours.

FHI has made routines and recommendations for how the health service should handle people who may be infected.

– We now assist Oslo Municipality in informing those with whom the traveler had close contact during the stay. It is too early to assess the risk of any of them being infected. The risk of infection to the general population is considered very low, says Aavitsland.
