IndyCar | Alex Palou hits Road America twice

(Los Angeles) Alex Palou (Chip Gagnassi) had a double blow at the GP Road America on Sunday, which he won by taking advantage of the mechanical failure of Josef Newgarden (Penske) two laps from the finish, to take the lead at the championship, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Aged 24, Palou, who plays, with the Mexican Pato O’Ward, the American Colton Herta and the Dutch Rinus Veekay, the young generation ready to take power in IndyCar, clinches the second victory of his career after that in the GP of Alabama at the start of the season.

Here is the Spaniard who flies to the general, by dislodging O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) who finished 9e.

Party in 5e position, he managed to move up three places, but could never really worry Newgarden, who was firmly dominating the race and was promised victory.

But at 53e lap, the American, championship winner in 2017 and 2019, suddenly had a mechanical problem and Palou overtook him, along with eighteen other competitors on the last two laps. Very frustrating for Newgarden who thought he would get his first victory of the season, after finishing 2e Detroit’s second race last weekend.

Colton Herta (Andretti) finished 2nde place, ahead of Australian Will Power (3e, Penske) and New Zealander Scott Dixon (4e, Chip Gagnassi), defending champion.

Great animator of the race, the French Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne) finished in 5e position, after great battles won with Graham Rahal (11e, Rahal Letterman Lanigan) and Alexander Rossi (7e, Andretti).

The other two French were less visible. Simon Pagenaud (Penske), yet started in 6e position, a fini 18e, two rows behind Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt).
