Fernando Alonso (39) wanted to finally win the Indy 500, which took place for the first time since 1911 without a spectator – and with it the “Triple Crown”: successes in Monaco, Le Mans and Indy. The Spaniard never played a role from starting position 26 (with 33 pilots) and was even lapped. Graham Hill (died 1975) was the only one who made it!

The Spaniard Alonso can now forget his fourth appearance in the pasta pot. Because Renault boss Abiteboul has declared: “If Alonso drives for us in 2021 and 2022, Indianapolis is a taboo topic for Fernando!” In 2017 Alonso had an engine failure in Indy, in 2019 he could not even qualify. On Sunday there was only 21st place.

Andretti cannot defeat Curse
Again no luck for the Andretti clan. Marco Andretti (33) was on pole, but he couldn’t defeat the curse either. In the end, he finished in 13th place. Only in 1969 did Mario Andretti (now 80) win the most important car race for the Americans!

Since then, Mario, Michael, John, Jeff and Marco have always failed. In 2006, on his debut, Marco was intercepted at the finish line by Sam Hornish – 0.064 seconds after 800 kilometers!

Victory behind the safety car
Three laps before the end, Spencer Pigot triggered the yellow warning light again (do not overtake) with a horror crash at the pit entrance. And so the field rolled over the last three laps on the 2.5 mile long oval. A finale that the show Americans don’t like at all …

The Japanese Takuma Sato (43), who previously contested 90 formula races, wins for the second time since 2017 ahead of the Americans Scott Dixon and Graham Rahal. This time behind the safety car! The race was neutralized seven times!
