Indonesia’s Nickel Reserves: 5.3 Billion Tonnes with a Potential of 17 Billion Tonnes, Lasting Up to 15 Years – Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Reveals

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) revealed that Indonesia’s nickel ore reserves currently reach 5.3 billion tonnes, with a potential of 17 billion tonnes.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said, with current production capacity, Indonesia’s nickel reserves can last up to 15 years.

“We now have reserves for nickel potential, and there is potential. Our reserves are 5.3 billion tons, now our potential is 17 billion tons,” said Arifin at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Friday (15/9/2023) as quoted by Tribunnews .com.

Arifin stated, taking into account the existing conditions, production activities must be carried out in a measurable manner.

According to him, the life of Indonesia’s nickel reserves can be extended. The condition is that you have to do exploration. This is because the potential that exists in the country is very large.

Moreover, Indonesia also plans to develop an electric vehicle battery recycling industry.

“In the future, the battery industry can have a recycling industry, it can be topped up, so it will take longer. We just don’t waste it,” said Arifin.
