Indonesia’s Abundance of Nickel Positions it to Become a Rich Country in the Electric Vehicle Market

Jakarta

Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) emphasized that the abundance of nickel as a raw material for batteries makes Indonesia have the opportunity to become a rich country amidst the trend. electric vehicle global. According to IBC, Indonesia can be like Saudi Arabia which is successful thanks to its agricultural products.

IBC President Director, Toto Nugroho said, if Saudi Arabia became rich thanks to its petroleum, then Indonesia should be able to have the same fate through its abundant nickel.

Indonesia has great potential like Saudi Arabia (which is very rich) thanks to its oil. This is an advantage of us having nickel resources. So apart from increasing domestic demand for EVs in the country, we can meet battery needs throughout the world,” said Toto at Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF), Jakarta.

According to Toto, in the next few years, demand for nickel as a raw material for EV batteries will increase rapidly, even up to 70 percent. This fact is certainly good news for a country like Indonesia which has abundant nickel reserves.

“We have nickel which is a component of batteries and we have produced it here. I think in the next few years it will increase by 70 percent so Indonesia has big potential like Saudi Arabia in terms of oil,” he said.

Toto reminded that nickel management must be carried out in good ways and upholding sustainable values. When the demand for nickel becomes greater, stricter supervision is needed.

“When managing nickel, everything must be done in a good way. Everything must follow standards, then regarding waste (batteries) too. So when all the standards are implemented correctly, then (electric cars) can be completely green,” he said.

Furthermore, Toto added, even though there is an abundance of nickel, the electric vehicle market in Indonesia is still very small. In fact, we are nothing compared to giant countries like China and the United States.

“We have to be aware of how electric vehicles are growing in the world. Now, China (annual sales of electric vehicles) has reached 6 million units, the United States 3 million. Meanwhile, Indonesia is still tens of thousands of units,” said Toto.
