Semifinal match AFF U-23 Cup 2023 between Indonesia and Thailand presents a classic encounter between two Southeast Asian countries, the last time they met was colored by commotion.
Indonesia and Thailand advanced to the semifinals AFF U-23 Cup 2023 with a different status. The Red and White team won the best runner-up, while the War Elephants won Group A.
This meeting is the first duel between Indonesia and Thailand after meeting at the party for the 2023 SEA Games gold medal.
At that time, the U-22 Indonesian national team won with a score of 5-2 in a match that had to be completed in 120 minutes. The final match in football at the 32nd SEA Games was marred by incidents that tarnished both countries as well as Southeast Asia.
In that match, the U-22 Indonesian national team celebrated the victory too early. The foul whistle at the last minute was wrongly interpreted by the Garuda side as a sign of the end of the match. After that the commotion broke out after Thailand scored a goal in the final seconds of the match.
Players and officials of the two sides clashed again after Irfan Jauhari’s goal in the early minutes of extra time. There was an exchange of punches during the commotion this time.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stepped in to sanction players and officials from Indonesia and Thailand. Titan Agung and Komang Teguh Trisnanda were among the players who received a penalty, so they were canceled from strengthening for Indonesia in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup.
Indonesia and Thailand also brought several 2023 SEA Games alumni players who were not punished such as Ramadhan Sananta, Irfan Jauhari, Beckham Putra, Alfeandra Dewangga, Jeam Kelly Sroyer, Haykal Alhafiz, Bagas Kaffa, Thirawut Sraunson, Songchai Thongcham, Yotsakorn Burapha, and Apisit Saenseekammuan .
