Indonesia Polio outbreak, immunization target to reach 95%.

JawaPos.com – After the discovery of 1 case of paralysis due to polio virus and 3 polio virus positive children in Aceh, the government started simultaneous mass immunization in the province. To achieve herd immunity, the target immunization must be 95%.

The Ministry of Health has started administering polio immunization simultaneously for one week, targeting 95,603 children aged 0-12 in Pidie District, Aceh. Entitled mass immunization against polio National Immunization Week (Sub PIN) This was done following the Extraordinary Polio Incident in the region some time ago.

“We have started to give mass immunization against polio to children in Pidie district,” said Director-General of Disease Prevention and Control Maxi Rein Rondonuwu in a statement from the Ministry of Health on Thursday (1/ 12).

In addition, Maxi said that apart from Pidie district, polio Sub-PIN will also be done in 21 regencies/cities in Aceh province. The implementation will be carried out in several phases, in 2 rounds with a target target of approximately 1,217,939 children aged between 0 and 12 years.

In detail, the first round of Sub PIN will be implemented in Pidie district starting from November 28, 2022, in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Besar, Pidie Jaya, Bireun, North Aceh and Sabang City it will start on December 5, while for the other districts /city in Aceh province will start on December 12, 2022.
While the second round of Sub PIN, will start on the 4th week of January 2023 covering all areas of Aceh province.

In each round, the new oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) will be used in 50 doses per vial manufactured by PT. Biopharma. This vaccine is used only in the implementation of Sub PIN in the context of fighting the type 2 polio epidemics.

“Each Sub PIN round will be done within 1 week plus 5 sweep days. The minimum distance between rounds is one month, with a target of at least 95% evenly spread across the region,” Maxi said.

“Hopefully this goal can be achieved, but if there is still a risk of transmission, the next round of Sub PINs will be done. This is to ensure that we can really stop the transmission,” Maxi said.

Come and get immunized immediately

Encourage parents by inviting their children, ages 0 months to 12 years, including newcomers, regardless of previous immunization status, to go to the nearest health facility or immunization center to get immunized against the polio. With a vaccine, it will prevent children from becoming paralysed.

“Together we protect our children from polio and other immunization-preventable diseases. We take our children to puskesmas, posyandu and other immunization service posts to get immunized,” she explained.
