Indonesia is considering imposing a tourism tax due to incidents of badly behaved tourists, but business groups fear it could harm recovery of the sector post-pandemic.

Indonesia is considering implementing a tourist tax following incidents in which foreigners have violated laws or customs. The tourism and creative economy minister, Sandiaga Uno, said the possibility of a tax is currently being studied, with the expectation that the study will conclude in the coming weeks. The proposal comes after coordinating maritime affairs and investment minister, Luhut Pandjaitan, called for a tourism tax, citing disorderly behaviour by low-income foreign visitors to Bali. While funds collected through the tax could be used to support the development of the local tourism industry, business groups fear the tax would deter people from visiting and damage the still-recovering sector. Prior to the pandemic, Bali received 6.2 million foreign visitors a year.
