Indignation in Mexico: seven-year-old girl tortured and murdered

The discovery of a seven-year-old girl killed in Mexico sparked outrage Monday, two days after hundreds of women protested the particularly brutal murder of a young woman who shocked the country.

The body of the girl with signs of torture was found on Saturday in Tlahuac, southeast of the capital, after being reported missing on February 11.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, considered that such a case was the consequence of “the decomposition of society” which occurred during “the neoliberal period” before he came to power.

The local prosecution offered a reward of two million pesos (about $ 107,000) in exchange for information that identifies who kidnapped and killed the child.

Prosecutor’s spokesman Ulises Lara told reporters that the girl’s mother had come to pick her up from school and that, having not found her, she had started the search. According to images held by the authorities, the day the girl disappeared, she was seen held by the hand by another woman.

The girl’s mother asked for justice for her child. “I need your support because today was my daughter but tomorrow may be yours,” she said. She accused a man of killing her daughter, but did not give further details.
