New Delhi, Sep 28 (EFE) .- India registered slightly more than 18,000 coronavirus infections on Tuesday, falling for the first time in six months from the 20,000 cases after the Asian country became the global epicenter of the pandemic in April and May in a virulent second wave.

The 18,795 cases reported in the past 24 hours are the lowest number in the past 201 days, the Indian Health Ministry said in a statement.

The Asian country has recorded 33.6 million infections since the start of the pandemic, while the 179 deaths registered today raised the total number of fatalities to 447,373.

However, experts have pointed out that the official data does not reflect the real number of deaths and infections, a claim that the Indian health authorities have repeatedly rejected.

The infections registered in recent weeks contrast with the record numbers reached during the second wave of covid-19 in this country of 1.35 billion inhabitants, between April and May, when more than 400,000 daily cases were counted.

This virulent second wave of the disease left images of hospitals on the brink of collapse and saturated crematoriums, and also caused a lack of oxygen for medical use and intensive care beds in some areas of the country.

The limited availability of vaccines has been a determining factor in the country’s vaccination plan, which despite being known as “the world’s pharmacy” and housing the largest vaccine factory, faced serious problems for months to supply its local demand.

The country has already administered 870 million doses, 10 million in the last 24 hours, and about 230 million people, or around 16% of the adult population, have been inoculated with the full schedule of the vaccine. EFE
