Index – Abroad – Hungary strongly and unconditionally supports Moldova’s membership in the European Union

“Hungary strongly and unconditionally supports Moldova’s accession to the European Union, as this would benefit the community and help improve its competitiveness,” stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó.

The head of the ministry held talks with the Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea. Szijjártó emphasized after the meeting that the Hungarian position is clear:

the performance of each country wishing to join must be assessed individually.

“The integration paths of different countries should not be connected, and countries that perform worse should not be held captive by the European integration processes of other countries,” he underlined.

Péter Szijjártó believed that the accession of Moldova would benefit the European Union.

We believe that speeding up the integration process of Moldova would help us to ensure that the European Union can once again improve its competitiveness

– he emphasized and then stated that the south-eastern expansion of the EU has always been one of the important aspirations of Hungarian foreign policy.

“Even after that, as before, we are at the disposal of the Moldovan government, and we will use all available means to help speed up the European integration process in Moldova,” stated Péter Szijjártó.

Soon it will be possible to travel to the capital of Moldova by plane

Péter Szijjártó also talked about the fact that WizzAir will soon restart its flight between Budapest and the Moldovan capital, Chisinau. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this can greatly help the further development of bilateral economic cooperation between Hungary and Moldova.

The head of the ministry reminded that a strategic partnership agreement has been in place between the two countries for four years, the results of which can already be clearly seen. Szijjártó emphasized that the bilateral trade turnover reached a peak and its value stabilized at around 200 million euros per year, in which the Hungarian pharmaceutical and food industry exports also play an important role.

According to his information, Hungarian companies delivered feed to Moldova worth more than HUF two billion, thereby contributing to the continuous improvement of the country’s agricultural competitiveness.

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the extension of the customs exemption agreement between the European Union and Moldova can give further impetus to the further development of economic relations.

We support the start of negotiations between the European Union and Moldova regarding the long-term maintenance of duty-free status as soon as possible

he said.

The minister also mentioned that the confidence of domestic companies is greatly strengthened by the fact that the largest Hungarian bank, OTP, has become one of the most important players in the Moldovan financial market.

According to him, the fact that WizzAir will soon restart its flight between Budapest and Chisinau can significantly help economic cooperation.

“Finally, I would like to tell you that both the government of Moldova and the government of Hungary naturally feel a special responsibility to protect national agriculture, and just as the Moldovan government represents the interests of Moldovan farmers, the Hungarian government represents the interests of Hungarian farmers,” he stated.

In this regard, he stated that this goal is served by maintaining the ban on grain imports from Ukraine, which is necessary for the protection of Hungarian farmers and the domestic market.
