“Understanding, at this level of detail, how the heart handles energy and nutrition should inform the development of future treatments for heart failure and related conditions,” says Zoltan Arany, MD, Ph.D., a professor of Medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Metabolism Program at Penn. Medicine, quoted from Medicalxpress.
The senior researcher revealed that they have a clear picture of how the heart can fill itself. The researchers are directing their focus on finding ways to increase cardiac metabolism in heart failure.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States (US), more than 6 million adults in the US have lived unsuccessfully heart. It often occurs as a result of coronary artery disease or a heart attack resulting in an inability to pump blood strongly enough around the body so that it doesn’t support other organs normally.
Currently, treatment for heart failure is directed specifically at the symptoms, such as treating fluid buildup in the lungs and lower extremities. Heart failure treatment can use assistive devices to pump blood flow.
Researchers have considered how to undergo a heart transplant effectively and efficiently. However, an understanding of heart function could allow researchers to develop therapies that are more effective at restoring heart function or ability. Arany and her team simultaneously took blood samples into and out of the heart in 87 subjects in this study. the researchers used two sample subjects for comparison.
