Inclusive Film Festival for Children with Functional Diversity in Irun Today: Special Features and Free Invitations

Today Irun takes a very important step to be a more inclusive city. The first adapted film festival is held this afternoon, starting at 5:00 p.m., at the Amaia Cultural Center; an event that the City Council has organized in collaboration with Aurreratu Elkartea. It will still be a film festival, open to all audiences, but it will have some special features so that children with functional diversity can fully enjoy the session. Invitations are free, and can be requested at the Tourist Office or on the website irun.org/entradas.

During today’s festival it will be possible to enter and leave the auditorium whenever spectators need to. The Amaia dance room will be set up so that if someone gets overwhelmed they can take a break. There will be dim lighting during the screening, and the sound will be at a lower volume than usual. No trailers or advertisements will be shown. The film proposal consists of four short films between 4 and 28 minutes long.

  • Program

  • Four short films ‘Operation Santa Claus’ (28 minutes), ‘The Sleigh’ (4 minutes), ‘Aurora Borealis’ (15 minutes) and ‘Merry Grandmas’ (8 minutes).

There will be no trailers or advertisements, and both the sound and lighting will be soft. Spectators will have the opportunity to get up at any time and a separate quiet area will be set up.

Opportunity to learn

At Aurreratu Elkartea “we really wanted to start with an accessibility plan,” says Mari Llucia, a member of the association. “This is the beginning, and there are many other things we have to move forward on.” Nuria Alzaga, Culture delegate, adds that this path will be “a learning experience for everyone”, and that this afternoon’s session is “a great opportunity” in that sense: “it is the first time, but it will not be the last.” Alzaga corroborates the “commitment” of the municipal department to work on cultural plans that are increasingly accessible, and in which all types of people can be included.

Mari Llucia explains that even today there is “lack of knowledge” about the needs of children with functional diversity, “and that makes people feel afraid, simply because the reality of these people is not known.” “We must respond to this lack of knowledge,” adds Nuria Alzaga. Hence, today’s festival is aimed at all families who want to enjoy an afternoon of cinema in an environment where we all have a place.

The main difference with respect to ordinary film sessions is that this “will be more facilitating, in general,” summarizes Mari Llucia. The fact that the program is made up of short films also contributes to giving the event a “lighter” character. «Many people with functional diversity have a shorter attention span capacity. If we do it this way, it is much easier for them,” explains Mari Llucia.

Also for the little ones

All these characteristics make this festival also “a good opportunity for young boys and girls to introduce themselves to the world of cinema.” The darkness and loud volume of an ordinary movie theater can scare a two or three-year-old child, and a movie may seem too long, but in this afternoon’s session he will find a much more appropriate and friendly atmosphere: “it’s a “an excellent opportunity to enter the seventh art,” says Mari Llucia.
