Netflix disables accounts
Netflix is one of the profiteers of the corona crisis, especially at the beginning of the lockdown, consumers worldwide increasingly resorted to the streaming service, which rapidly increased the number of subscribers by 15.8 million users to a total of 183 million.
But now Netflix is canceling the subscription for many long-term users, automatically, as the company announced in a statement on May 21 on its own homepage.
But these are not – as might be suspected – layoffs that are pronounced due to user misconduct.
Inactive subscribers will be canceled
Rather, Netflix focuses on subscribers whose activity indicates that they are no longer using the streaming service – but who still pay the monthly fee.
“You know the uncomfortable feeling when you remember that you signed up for a subscription that you haven’t used in a long time? At Netflix, we definitely don’t want you to have to pay for something you don’t use,” the company writes in its statement.
With this reason, Netflix now reserves the right of termination, which in this case works in favor of the consumer.
Users can counteract the termination
However, Netflix will not cancel the subscription arbitrarily and without further warnings. Initially, inactive users will be informed via email that their subscription will be canceled soon.
This means that every informed user is free to decide whether they want to continue using the Netflix service or not. The company contacts every subscriber who has not streamed series or films for at least a year. According to Netflix, there should be paid subscriptions that have not been used for over two years.
Netflix has been notifying users of this since the middle of last month, with several 100,000 subscribers. With 183 million paying users, however, this is only 0.05 percent.
Once a subscriber has been informed, Netflix allows a period of at least one month to elapse to give the user the chance to object to the cancellation before the subscription is canceled at the end of the month. If this period has been missed, it is possible to reactivate the subscription within the next ten months without deleting preferences and histories.
