In the United States, manufacturers will have to prevent alcoholic motorists from getting behind the wheel

Every year, drink driving is responsible for the deaths of 10,000 people in the United States. A scourge that President Joe Biden seems to have embraced, since he has just signed an unprecedented law that will require manufacturers to integrate devices for detecting drink driving in new vehicles. The American administration in charge of road safety, in connection with automobile brands, will have 3 years to organize itself in order to set up detection standards.

On the technology side, two avenues are being studied: an air detector capable of “sucking in” the driver’s breathing and measuring his alcohol level, and a fingerprint sensor, also capable of detecting by the pores of the skin.

According to associations, this is the most important road safety law for 41 years in the United States. The NHTSA, it announces that these devices would save some 9,400 lives per year in the country of Uncle Sam, in a country where, however, many states impose fairly low and strict limits in terms of blood alcohol in the blood. flying.

EAD in France

In France, there is already a similar system: the EAD, for Immobilizer Breathalyzer. A judge can in fact impose the EAD in certain cases:

  • Driving offense while alcoholic
  • Obviously intoxicated driving offense
  • Refusal to submit to blood alcohol checks
  • Recidivism of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Recurrent refusal to submit to blood alcohol tests
  • Homicide or unintentional injury by driving while under the influence of alcohol

However, this EAD cannot remain forever, since it cannot be imposed more than five years by the public authorities on a person being tried. However, this EAD does not prevent drinking before driving: a limit is set at 0.2 g / L of blood.
