The Coordinating Council of Organizations of Russian Compatriots of the United States (KSORS) drew up a petition against the demolition of the monument to the ruler of Russian settlements in North America in the late XVIII – early XIX centuries, Alexander Baranov in the city of Sitka.
“We believe that the demolition of the statue is the erasure of our Russian historical heritage,” it says in a message on the organization’s website.
It is noted that a group of residents of Sitka came up with a proposal to dismantle the monument.
Alexander Baranov was the first Russian governor of Alaska, a monument to him is located in the historical center of Sitka.
Formerly U.S. President Donald Trump said vandalism has completely stopped in the country in relation to the monuments, after he introduced ten-year prison sentences for such crimes.
