Williams won the second round match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Serena is in ninth place in the WTA, but Venus is in 67th place.
The two sisters have met for the 31st time since 1998 in the WTA tour, winning 19 victories for Serena. Sister Venus is the second most winning tennis player after Maria Sharapova, whom Serena has beaten 20 times.
Venus celebrated its 40th anniversary this summer, while Serena will celebrate her 39th birthday at the end of September. The last time the total age of the participants of one match was so great was in 2004, when Emija Frreizere and Martin Navratilova competed in the tournament in Charleston.
The WTA tour resumed last week with a tournament in Palermo, and this week there are tournaments in Lexington and Prague.
