In Sweden and Denmark, the highest daily increases in coronavirus infections

In Sweden and Denmark, the highest daily increases in coronavirus infections were confirmed on Friday – 4697 and 1427, respectively. While the Swedish authorities still mainly apply the recommendations, the Danish government is tightening the restrictions.

In the last 24 hours in Sweden, 20 deaths were confirmed among people infected with the coronavirus, the total death toll is 6,022. This means that deaths from COVID-19 are starting to increase again. The number of patients in intensive care units is also growing rapidly. On Friday, 92 patients with COVID-19 were treated with them, 34 more than a week ago. In total, 146,461 infections have been detected in the country so far.

In Denmark, the number of deaths from COVID-19 has increased by five to 738 in the last 24 hours. There are 23 patients in intensive care units, but the number of people hospitalized in other units is systematically growing. There were 191 of them on Friday, nine more than the day before. The total number of infections detected in Denmark since the outbreak of the pandemic is 53,180.

Swedish Social Minister Lena Hallengren believes that despite the worsening epidemic situation in Sweden, there is no need to take radical measures. – In my opinion, our society is already largely closed – she assessed in an interview with SVT television, referring to the fact that the Swedes follow the recommendations on avoiding contact.

In turn, Denmark has introduced a number of restrictions in recent days, including assembly limit up to 10 people, and it also prohibited the sale of alcohol after 22. In public transport, as well as in other places where it is difficult to keep a distance, cover your mouth and nose. A special situation is in North Jutland, which will be cut off by the government’s decision to counteract the spread of the mutant coronavirus, which has been detected on numerous mink farms in the area.

On Friday, at a press conference organized in Copenhagen by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was reported that 214 people have contracted the so far mutated mink coronavirus. In 12 cases, it concerns the transmission of a virus (variant 5) considered by epidemiological services to be particularly dangerous.

The representative of the Danish infectious disease control agency (SSI) Tyra Grove Krause believes the decision to kill 15 million mink is necessary because of the risk of ineffectiveness of a future Covid-19 vaccine. – It is worth taking such preventive measures – she argued.

The breeders, who were supported by politicians from the center-right opposition, are not satisfied with the decision to kill fur animals. They fear that the compensation from the state will be too small, and that the liquidation of the farm will affect Danish exports.

Norway also decided to take radical measures. The mayor of Oslo, Raymond Johansen, in connection with a significant increase in infections (a record of 162 cases on Thursday) announced the city’s social closure on Friday. From Monday, cinemas, theaters, sports and recreational facilities will not be open. There will be a ban on selling alcohol in restaurants. Schools will be able to decide to switch to distance learning.
