On Tuesday 30 June in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, about 2 thousand people gathered on Charles Bridge, one of the main tourist destinations in the city, where a large public banquet was organized to celebrate the end of the crisis due to the coronavirus epidemic. A long table was set up and the participants – who largely did not wear masks and did not respect the safety distances – were invited to bring food from home and share it with others. The event was organized by a city group and the city council. In reality, the epidemic is far from over in the Czech Republic, and on June 30, 149 positive cases and 1 death were recorded.

In total, around 12 thousand cases of coronavirus positive people and 349 deaths were recorded in the country, out of a population of 10 million, numbers that are lower than in many other European countries. The first three cases were declared on March 1 and in the following days schools were closed, a state of emergency was declared and the obligation to cover the nose and mouth in public with masks, scarves or other fabric objects was introduced. On March 16, travel deemed non-essential was then prohibited.

These measures remained in effect until around mid-April, when they were gradually eased, and on May 17 the government declared an end to the state of emergency. As of June 22, the rules still prohibit the organization of events with more than 1000 participants, unless it is possible to divide people into sectors. The event on Tuesday, with around 2 thousand participants and without dividers, therefore appears contrary to this measure. From June 15, moreover, in the whole country it is no longer mandatory to wear masks outdoors, while before they had to be worn if it was not possible to ensure a distance of two meters from other people.
