In honor of the Beastie Boys: A street in New York is named after them

The Beastie Boys are honored with a new street name in New York City. The New York City Council approved the renaming of the street on the Lower East Side, at the corner of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street, where the cover of their album PAUL’S BOUTIQUE was shot. The street will now be called “Beastie Boys Square”. A petition was started in 2013.

The new street sign honors Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and the late Adam “MCA” Yauch. Council member Christopher Marte explains, “As many of us know, when the Beastie Boys burst onto the scene, they really changed hip-hop. I see it as a celebration. A celebration for the Lower East Side, a celebration for hip-hop, and most importantly, a celebration for our community that has long worked to make this happen.”

The street corner is not the first public space reminiscent of the Beastie Boys: in May 2013, a playground in Brooklyn was named after Adam Yauch, who died a year earlier.

In celebration of their 30th anniversary, the Beastie Boys announced a reissue of their 1992 album CHECK YOUR HEAD in May. The record was originally released in April 1992 and was their third studio album, following LICENSED TO III (1986) and PAUL’S BOUTIQUE (1989). the band. On July 15th, the trio released a limited reissue of the rare 4xLP deluxe version of CHECK YOUR HEAD, which was released exclusively in 2009.

The box set is currently sold out everywhere. It includes the 2009 remaster of the original double album, plus two additional LPs of bonus material including remixes, live versions and B-sides – all pressed on 180g vinyl.
