Once again, luck was on the side of the Phénix tobacconist, in the La Madeleine district. A year and two days after a player won the sum of €500,000 with a scratch game, the news broke: another person won a million euros thanks to a “Millionaire” ticket. “I was the one who served him that morning, but I learned later that he had won, when it started to be known in the neighborhood”remembers Antonio Almeida, co-manager of the Phoenix.
A casual gamer
The young man, renowned for his kindness to the regulars of the Rolland-Plaisance esplanade where the Phénix is located, is however not a relentless player. He spends fifty euros on scratch games or lotto tickets at a given moment, then tries his luck again a few months later. Far from the profile of the Euromillion buff, who prepares his ticket every day or every week. “As a jackpot fell on July 12, 2021, a lot of people tried their luck around that date and it ended up working on the 14th. Maybe that’s a sign”, laughs Antonio Almeida. For now, the big winner continues to come to the Phoenix as before. “He hasn’t received his winnings yet. Maybe that will change later”, theorizes the seller. If the lucky player has not yet received his winnings, it is because the procedure for the big winners is well supervised.
The chips are down (anonymously)
First of all, you should know that gambling in France is anonymous. If the French Games (FDJ) knows, in the context of the lottery for example, that a jackpot has been won, she does not know by whom: it is therefore necessary to contact the “big winners” service, ie sums from €500,000. Please note that there is a deadline for reporting to the FDJ. Sixty days for winners of draw games, such as Lotto or Euromillions. The case of our millionaire from La Madeleine is more complicated: the deadlines for scratch games vary according to the ticket purchased. If in doubt, contact the FDJ as soon as possible.
Millionaire special treatment
From a million euros won, the FDJ invites the lucky winner to his seat to give him his winnings, by check or transfer. The winner can then access, if he wishes, free training to learn how to manage his assets and his investments. “A third of the winners do it, but it’s also a way for them to meet people who have been through the same thing”, explains the FDJ.
