In Estonia, the vaccine against Covid-19 will also be given to workers in the education, health and social care sectors / Day

According to Health Minister Tanel Kick, these populations most exposed to Covid-19 risk groups will be able to receive a booster dose at least six months after the vaccination course is completed.

On Tuesday, the Estonian National Commission of Experts on Immunoprophylaxis recommended the introduction of primary vaccination for people over the age of 65 and residents of care homes.

At the same time, it stated that a maintenance dose could be offered to all members of the public no earlier than eight months after the completion of the initial vaccination course.

In addition, regardless of the vaccine with which the person has been vaccinated, experts recommend the use of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine for booster vaccination.

Minister of Education and Science Līna Kersna has said that school nurses will be given the right to vaccinate adults so that teachers can receive additional vaccines directly at their school.

“We want schools to be able to be present for as long as possible. We currently have 77 outbreaks in schools, the most common are unvaccinated students, but the infection has also been detected in vaccinated teachers. We started vaccinating educators at the end of February, six months later, and now we see that vaccinated workers are also becoming infected because the effects of the vaccines have diminished, “she explained.

According to the Minister, teachers are in constant contact with unvaccinated students and the coronavirus is currently spreading rapidly among children and young people, so teachers must be protected as much as possible from the disease.

She recalled that one third of Estonian teachers are over 60 and half are over 50.

According to Kersna, teacher vaccination has borne fruit, with 45 out of the 77 outbreaks in which the number of infected teachers does not exceed three.

It is reported that people over the age of 65 in Estonia will be vaccinated mainly in GP practices, while in care institutions it will be provided by care providers.
