IMSS delivers wrong body

Mexico City.- An investigation by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) found that molecules derived from the Physalis nicandroides (Matapulgas) plant have a toxic effect on breast cancer cells.

According to Daniela Araiza Olivera, who heads the research at the Institute of Chemistry of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

This species, which belongs to the Solanaceae family, where tomatoes, chili peppers, potatoes and tobacco are found, helps lower cholesterol because it is high in fiber, has vitamin A and carotene, which promotes an antioxidant effect that is of useful in diabetic patients, explained the specialist, according to national media.

“It has more than 50 derivatives of it, as withanolides and sucrose-esters have a cytotoxic effect, that is, they kill and damage cells or tissues.”

University researchers found its cytotoxic effect by analyzing plant-derived chemotherapeutic agents by studying changes in signaling and metabolism in different derivatives of plant molecules in lung, colon, breast cancer cells, as well as in healthy kidney cells, they reported. .

“We found that of all these derivatives only nine, in small concentrations, were toxic for this specific type of breast cancer, whose cell line is called MCF-7,” said Araiza Olivera.

Another advantage is that for it to be toxic in healthy cells, very high doses would be needed, thus avoiding the side effects that chemotherapies cause in healthy cells.

The specialist explained that they compared the effects of the plant with those of a cytotoxic drug called Camptothecin – with antiproliferative properties on several malignant tumors – and found that the latter attacks cancer cells and healthy cells, while Physalis nicandroides only damages cells. healthy in high doses.

In addition to this, they found kinases in an analysis in computational modeling, it is a family of proteins that “allowed them to observe that the molecule is absorbed at the digestive level, which is good because the patients would ingest it without the need to be connected to no apparatus ”.

“These are very basic studies, we are in the beginning, there is much to do, study and describe; we are at the beginning, in the analysis of cell cultures. It is necessary to go a long way, to be sure of the effectiveness and then move on to the animal study. However, it is important that from all this range of derivatives we can find a molecule that would be important to continue studying so that in the future it becomes a therapeutic resource for patients with breast cancer ”, he added.

Likewise, he said that it is important to investigate why it kills only cancer cells in the breast.

The ‘Physalis’, ‘cape gooseberry’ or ‘flea killer’, as it is known in Colombia, is characterized by a fleshy, sweet and slightly acidic berry, covered by a basket formed by five sepals that protects it against insects, birds, pathogens and extreme weather conditions.

Its consumption is natural, in chocolate funds, pastries, jellies, juices, ice creams, sweets, jams, in sauces for white meats and salads and even as decoration of special dishes. Internationally it is considered as an exotic fruit. Industrially, jams, nectars, cloudy juices, and preserves are manufactured with very satisfactory results, offering a yield of 83 to 86% in pulp.
