“Improving Mental Health in Muslim Communities During Disasters: Expert Insights and Therapeutic Skills”

The Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Science among Arabs and Muslims at the University of Sharjah, in cooperation with the Department of Family Medicine, Community Health and Behavioral Sciences at the College of Medicine, organized the third scholarly talk under the title “Improving Mental Health During Disasters: Psychological Interventions and Appropriate Therapeutic Skills in Muslim Community”.

The Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Science among Arabs and Muslims at the University of Sharjah, in cooperation with the Department of Family Medicine, Community Health and Behavioral Sciences at the College of Medicine, organized the third scholarly talk under the title “Improving Mental Health During Disasters: Psychological Interventions and Appropriate Treatment Skills in Islamic Circles”, presented by Professor Al-Alam Fulbright Dr. Louis Downes from California State University, Sacramento, with the aim of discussing the most important skills that must be available in psychologists and counselors to provide psychological interventions in crises and disasters to support and protect psychological and mental health, in the presence of the Director of the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Science among Arabs and Muslims, Prof. Dr. Masoud Idris and Dr. Tarek Merabtene, Director of the Office of International Relations, and a number of members of the teaching and administrative staff.

During the lecture, Dr. Lewis Downes presented a number of issues that the international consultant must be prepared to face in the field, whether it is consulting in preparing curricula for universities that want to train their students, building disaster and crisis teams, or supervising these teams that provide care to promote mental health. Post-disaster. Dr. Lewis also touched on the obstacles he faced when implementing programs in institutions and universities in Muslim societies. He discussed a number of skills that workers in the field of mental health care must possess during disasters, including the ability to assess the condition of a person affected by crises, his reactions, and his ability to respond and deal with future disasters.
