The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)) presented in February of this year what the new subway trains in New York, or subway, will look like, which are expected to enter service in the last quarter of 2023.
These open gangway carriages are part of an order for 535 units of the R211 model. That includes 20 cars with the open gangway feature unveiled in February, an additional 515 cars with futuristic amenities and 15 Staten Island Railway five-car trains.
These new New York subway trains are a critical part of the MTA’s ongoing modernization efforts and will be brought into service gradually.
The carriages feature wider doors designed to speed boarding and alighting and reduce the time passengers trains They go through the seasons.
These open-gangway cars feature interconnecting accordion-style walls that allow passengers to move freely between them.
The new models will have security cameras, additional accessible seats, digital screens that will provide more detailed station-specific information, brighter lighting and signage, among other features that enhance the customer experience.
“Wider doors and additional accessible seats will dramatically improve the experience for all passengers, and particularly those with disabilities. The open gangway cars will also allow customers with mobility devices or strollers to get around a train like never before, and we are excited to test drive these new cars.”
In October 2022, the MTA announced approval to order an additional 640 subway cars, bringing the total number of new subway cars to 1,175 over the next two years. This second set of new subway cars is expected to be delivered in early 2025.
