In the 2000 film, Tom Hanks plays the character Chuck Noland, a plane crash survivor who survives four years on a desert island. The volleyball, which he calls Wilson, is his only “friend” and “interlocutor” on the island.
In his battle against loneliness, Noland talks to Wilson as if the ball were human. Out of the urge for human interaction, he draws a face on the ball with his bloodied hand.
