Iga Świątek Shines in WTA Finals: Two Victories and Close to Semi-Finals

Iga Świątek is in great shape during the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico. She won two victories and is close to advancing to the semi-finals. During both matches, she could count on the support of Polish fans, but also those from abroad who also love the second-placed player in the world ranking. Although one of the American journalists decided to question it, he quickly got an answer.

Iga Świątek (2nd WTA) started her WTA Finals competition with a match against Marketa Vondrousova (6th WTA). In the first set, the Czech was able to keep up with our player, but in the second she had nothing to say. As a result, the Pole won 7:6 (3), 6:0. The match with Coco Gauff (3rd WTA) had a similar picture, which ended with Świątek’s victory 6:0, 7:5. Two match victories brought her significantly closer to advancing to the semi-finals, but the question of the place in the top four will be decided by Friday’s match against Ons Jabeur (7th WTA).

The fans did not give the commentator any words about Świątek

Just like in the match against the Czech, Świątek could count on the support of Polish fans also in the match against the American. This fact, of course, did not go unnoticed by our player during the post-match conversation. – As usual, Polish fans came to cheer me on. I am truly grateful for this and thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s amazing to play in such an atmosphere, she concluded. The Pole is a true sports icon in our country, so the presence of her fans in Cancun should not be surprising.

After these words, one of the journalists commenting on Świątek’s match with Gauff decided to make a very bold statement. – If only Świątek could find a way to gain fans outside Poland – he said without thinking. This comment was met with a strong reaction from fans from all over the world, who expressed great appreciation and admiration for the Polish woman. “I grimaced. Stupid words from the commentator,” we read in one of the replies.

Another user pointed out that fans of other tennis stars were once treated in a similar way. “We used to hear similar things with Halep and the Romanians. It’s a very xenophobic approach. You wouldn’t hear such comments about British, American or Spanish fans,” he concluded. “It’s like labeling Djokovic only as a Serb, which still happens today. I’m not Polish or Serbian and I love them both, so what now?” – another fan echoed.
