IFK Göteborg’s heavy blow – Thern injured: “I expect that something has broken”

IFK Gothenburg won 2-0 against IFK Norrköping for the second time in the space of a week. Now they are advancing up the table.

Less bright for the home team was that Simon Thern was forced to retire injured in the final minutes. The 29-year-old limped and was unable to get off the pitch on his own machine. After the match, the midfielder was not too positive.

– It narrowed in the thigh, so I expect that something has broken. I’d be surprised if it was just cramping. Obviously it’s not optimal, but what the hell to do? I have gone through periods of injury before, says Thern to Fotbollskanalen.

Did it all happen in a duel?

– No, I felt the muscle tighten with ten minutes left. Then I thought about whether I should wave someone in. When I made a sharper turn, it banged.

– I don’t quite know what it is. If the muscle has gone, it’s hell. We hope that it is not a huge tear and that it is in the right place. But it is completely impossible to answer now, says Simon Thern.

At the press conference after the match, coach Mikael Stahre gave a quick and clear message about the status of Thern.

– Probably a rupture.

If so, how long will he be gone?

– Four to six weeks, says Stahre.
