Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud Md told about his close relationship with one of the senior KPK investigators Novel Baswedan. In fact, Mahfud admitted that he had said that Novel was suitable as the Attorney General.
This was conveyed by Mahfud while filling an activity at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta in the headline ‘Dialogue of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs: Development of the Actual Political, Legal, and Security Situation’ as broadcast on the Gadjah Mada University YouTube channel on Saturday (5/6/2021). What is Mahfud’s story about the novel like?
Initially there were a number of questions from the rectors and representatives from a number of universities in Yogyakarta. One of the questions highlighted the current condition of the KPK which was shrouded in polemic over the status of employees as ASN, including the issue of Novels being ‘removed’ through national insight test (TWK).
“If you ask me, I have always been pro-KPK, sir,” said Mahfud.
Then Mahfud told about his track record as Chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK). During his tenure, according to Mahfud, NCP many times to be destroyed.
“How many times have I been the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, 12 times I wanted to be overthrown by law, I kept winning the KPK, but the decision on the KPK does not lie with the government alone, in the DPR, in the party, in the civil society which broke too, civil society this will break, sir,” said Mahfud.
Regarding a number of KPK employees who are considered to have integrity, including Novel, who now wants to be ‘removed’ through TWK, Mahfud also knows them as good people. So, why are they then ‘removed’?
“You said that 12 people (75 employees) were good people. Yes, you said, I said, but the others said no, then whose size would you want to be considered correct?” said Mahfud.
Mahfud then told about the Novel. He admitted that Novel had been examined by the KPK but did not mention what case he was referring to. But on the note detik.com, Mahfud had undergone an examination at the KPK in 2014 regarding the case that ensnared Akil Mochtar, but at that time Mahfud was listed as inactive as Chairman of the Constitutional Court.
“I’m with Novel Baswedan, okay. When I was the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, I came to him when he said there was a corruption case, I came to check, I was examined for no more than 15 minutes, stood up Novel Baswedan this (demonstrating the novel giving respect), ‘Sir, if the leader of the country is like all of you, this country will be finished’, he said that,” said Mahfud.
“I said, ‘If I become president, you are the Attorney General’. At that time,” he continued.
However, according to Mahfud, there is another opinion that says Novel plays politics. What does it mean?
“But a lot of people assume Novel Baswedan this is political. If it’s a certain party person whose fault is clear left, this is what people say. There is already a report left, only these parties have shot, for example, there are people who say that, maybe for the KPK it is the most tragic, yes, I am honest, I am in both of them, I am all in,” said Mahfud.
