Iceland has declared a state of emergency after several earthquakes that have raised fears of a possible volcanic eruption. As a precautionary measure, the authorities have ordered thousands of people to evacuate southwest of Grindavík, the BBC reports.

In recent weeks, thousands of earthquakes, large or small, have been recorded around the nearby Fagradalsfjadl volcano.

Iceland’s Civil Defense Agency said the decision to evacuate came after concerns that “a magma tunnel currently forming could reach Grindavik”.

In a statement on Friday, the agency said people should leave the city, but stressed it was not an “emergency evacuation”, urging them to “remain calm as there is plenty of time”. “The evacuation is primarily preventive and the main goal is the safety of all residents of Grindavík,” it added.

All roads into the town of about 4,000 people have been closed.

The statement said there had been “significant changes in seismic activity” as the earthquakes moved towards Grindavik. The magma is likely to have spread beneath the city and it is “impossible to determine exactly” if and where it might emerge.
