Today the boulders eke out an inconspicuous existence on the way from the Bruderhaus to the Eschenberg restaurant.

They are called granite and gneiss, Verrucano or Sernifit and come from the Graubünden and Glarus mountains. We are talking about rocks that traveled to Winterthur on the glaciers of the Rhine and Linth rivers during the ice ages.

Most of these stones are not noticeable. They are small and round and lie in countless numbers in river gravel and in gravel pits. However, if a stone is more than a cubic meter in size, it is called a boulder. The largest in Switzerland is located in Habkern in the canton of Bern and weighs around 12,000 tons.
