Ibiza closes the big discos. The island reinvents itself: it will be the summer of nature

Ibiza is preparing to inaugurate a long season without the parties organized by the big clubs. Some say that only the beach clubs will open. The fact is that there will be no gatherings or even camps. Difficult to imagine it at first sight. But it is clear that it could not be done otherwise in this post-Covid summer, which began with the celebrations for San Juan (our San Giovanni) for the first time not on the beach in front of a bonfire, but in front of the Facebook page of the city council. Sad. But luckily something is moving.

The island is preparing to cancel its nightlife but to focus everything on its beauty, from the light of the sun, until sunset, here always romantic.

Some things change for those who go to Ibiza this year: night clubs and discos will remain closed. Then pay attention to the clock. According to municipal ordinance, the restaurants will close at 2. The bars and cafés at 22. The premises that can accommodate more than 300 people will remain closed. Popular festivals can start again (but this is only from July 1st) with limits: no more than a thousand people outdoors and a maximum of 300 indoors. The beach will also be under control: through sensors that activate at the entrance of people on the beach, you can always have the precise number of presences, to avoid gatherings. Groups with more than 20 people are prohibited.

Elena Zauli lives in Ibiza for 7 years, she moved there with her husband Martin and two children aged 9 and 6. She organizes weddings and events with bare feet and with wreaths on her head, he has worked in the clubs of Porto Cervo and collaborated with some clubs in Ibiza. Now they have just opened one of their own, in the most difficult period. “I won’t hide the anxiety we had – says Elena -. We signed the contract two weeks before the pandemic started, when the virus was only in China. During the lockdown we did the work, and from May 18 we opened “. Il Shu Ibiza it overlooks the beach of Talamanca and has reduced its capacity for its first summer: from 300 to 150 people.

“Here there is a lot of attention to social distancing and to the rules to be respected. The police are always present, checking that everyone respects the regulations – adds Elena -. There seems to be more attention now than at the beginning of the pandemic. For example, in lockdown you could only walk around the house, but if you wanted to go to the restaurant you could go around the whole island without limitations. Now, however, the presence of the controls is constant. But we are all relaxed, also because fortunately here the infection has not resumed, and even during the most difficult period, things went well “.

With these rules, however, only 30 percent of hotels will be able to reopen. Clubs and discos remain closed by government decision because they cannot guarantee spacing. Ushuaïa Ibiza has already made an appointment to its club for next year, while it is trying to reopen at least the hotel, the Tower, in compliance with the rules.

The holiday in Ibiza becomes slow, slow, to be spent in the middle of nature. Retreats or better spiritual retreats, meditation, yoga and mindfulness; besides the hippie markets (Las Dalias, Punta Arabì and Sant Jordi) also the walks on the beach (there are about 80 of them in all): there are 210 kilometers of coast, between tiny coves but also soft dunes. From Cala d’en Serra, beach north of the island, to Cala Salada with its dazzling turquoise waters. Cala Bassa, in the west of the island, near San Antoni, perfect for a holiday with children (it looks like a natural swimming pool). Or along the coast of San José (Cala Vadella, fine white sand), near the lighthouse of es Moscarter de Portinatx or the Plà de Corona de Santa Inés. Also take note of Cala Benirras: one of the few remaining wild and untouched. It will seem like going back in time. From here unforgettable sunsets and to accompany – according to common custom – with applause.

For those who love active holidays, there are hiking trails that cross the five municipalities of the island and overlook the sea: Eivissa, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni, Sant Joan and Santa Eulalia. To find out more about the history of Ibiza in addition to the necropolises of Puig des Molins, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, you can visit the Ses Salines nature reserve, south of the island, in front of Formentera.

Elena and Martin’s Shu Ibiza has meanwhile opened as a restaurant, from breakfast to dinner, with Mediterranean cuisine, pizza and cocktails. The tables are spaced but have no capacity limits, you can easily reach 20 seats. It works as much with tourists as with locals. It is close to the center, about 15 minutes from the most populated part of the island, easier to reach than those in the south or the far north, where it takes about forty minutes to arrive. On the island many villas have been rented by extended families and friends, for a more isolated holiday, in contact more with nature than with other people. You only go out to go to the beach and to have dinner at the restaurant.

″ Everything has changed, it seems to have gone back to the 70s. Few people on the island, quality tourism, not kids who come only for discos ”. The first tourist planes landed on the island, but not like the other years, not every day. The main street, the carretera cala secret, has only been a little busier since the day before yesterday. But nothing to do with the June, July and August of past years.

Some clubs may reopen – this is the rumor that circulates on the island – in mid-July or in August for small private parties, with a reduced number of guests. But there is nothing certain.

“I plan a wedding in September – continues Elena – but I still don’t know what limitations there will be for the evening party. In the meantime, I will continue with my activity, dedicating myself to yoga and mindfulness retreat in the villas and always respecting the rules. I think this will be our summer: less noise, less traffic, a holiday full of contact with nature and rediscovering oneself. I like to think that it will be a starry summer: perhaps with fewer people but with more quality tourism “.
