Head coach Paulo Bento of the Republic of Korea national football team will officially leave the Republic of Korea.

According to the Korean Football Association on the 12th, coach Bento will depart from Incheon International Airport by flight EK323 at 23:50 on the 13th.

Coach Bento took over as coach of the Korea national team in 2018 and took over from coach Shin Tae-yong, who stepped down after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Korean team successfully completed preparation football, which focuses on pressure and quick transitions, and achieved the feat of progressing to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar.

Although he received a lot of criticism for his limited selection of players and stubborn tactical management, he was able to leave Korea with the full support of football fans by reaching the second “round of 16 away” in history.

At the World Cup in Qatar, he was applauded for using equal tactics without retreat against world-class powers such as Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana. In particular, in the last match of the group stage against Portugal, he recorded 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss with a sensational goal, managing to access the round of 16 by beating Uruguay, becoming a national hero.

Despite losing 1-4 to Brazil in the round of 16, nobody criticized him. Subsequently, there were expectations about whether to renew the contract, but he said: “The trip with Korea is over.”

Recently, he attended a dinner hosted by President Yoon Seok-yeol and spent a casual and pleasant time with President Yoon, his wife and national team players.

As a player, Bento played for the Portuguese national team and was the star of the 2002 World Cup group stage 0-1 defeat to Korea. After retiring, as coach of the Portuguese national team, he played the European Football Federation (UEFA) Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, then coached Cruzeiro, Olympiacos and Chongqing Dangdai Lifan.
