The former world-class goalkeeper Iker Casillas spoke on club TV of his Portuguese club FC Porto about his heart attack a year ago. A return to the square seems unlikely.

“I was sad for about a month after the heart attack,” said the Spanish world champion and two-time European champion.

«I was afraid to go to sleep and to exert myself physically. It was impossible.” He now feels good. But he also takes a lot of medication to make him feel that way. “I think only doctors can say what I can or can’t do,” said the 38-year-old.

Return to the square unlikely

Casillas suffered a heart attack in training at FC Porto on May 1, 2019. “Some things have changed since then, mostly in my head,” said Casillas. He had “started to appreciate moments more”.

Sometimes players didn’t appreciate what they had. He thinks it is unlikely that he will return to the field. “You have to be realistic: the most important thing is my health.” His contract expires on June 30.

Casillas recently announced his candidacy to chair the Spanish association RFEF.
