Vaccination is one hot topic that is currently on everyone’s mind and for some it also raises questions. All the stories that go around can sometimes make you doubt and that also happened to Sarah, who doubts whether she should still have her children aged 1 and 4 vaccinated. At Y/M Parents she talks about her doubts.
“As a mother of two wonderful kids, aged 1 and 4, I have spent the past two years doubting and doubting about their vaccinations. To be honest, a few years ago it was still completely open to vaccinations. I believed in the science behind them and the protection they provide against scary diseases.
Sick from vaccinations
Until my youngest daughter got very sick every time after her vaccinations. That was the moment I decided to delve into it further. I started to read more and more info, especially online. And then I read all kinds of disturbing articles that stated that vaccines can have quite a few nasty side effects, from minor reactions to serious health problems. That made me doubt a lot, I can tell you.
I decided to share my concerns with my GP. I wanted to better understand the risks and benefits of vaccination, especially for my young kids. Fortunately, my doctor took the time to answer all my questions and explain the scientific facts. He assured me that the benefits of vaccination generally far outweigh the risks. He also stressed that serious side effects are really very rare and that vaccines have been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy.
Keep doubting
Despite this conversation, I continued to doubt. On the one hand I want to protect children, but on the other hand I feel fear of possible side effects. It’s kind of an inner battle I’m having with myself, but I soon realized I wasn’t the only one with these doubts. I found support from other parents in a Facebook group who had similar doubts. I could talk to them about my doubts and feelings.
In my area, however, it was different, it seemed as if there were two camps. Pro and contra. For example, my mother-in-law thought it was ridiculous that I might not want to have my children vaccinated anymore. “If they get sick, you’ll be forever sorry,” she would say. On the other hand, my neighbor is very anti-vaccination again, she believes in conspiracy theories and says that vaccines only make you sick.
Everyone is so outspoken in their opinion that I can’t really go to anyone with my doubts, except my contacts from my Facebook group. Fortunately, my husband is also in the same position as me, he understands my doubts, although he tends more towards vaccinating. We have therefore decided for now to do the vaccinations that have been around for decades, but not the new vaccinations. That was the best compromise we could come up with, but it still bothers me.”
