Brasilia, September 6, WAM, 21 people were killed as a result of the hurricane that struck southern Brazil yesterday.
Dos Sol Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande state, said during a press conference that dozens of firefighters were called in, hundreds of people were rescued, and trapped residents were evacuated via helicopters.
The local authorities said in a statement that more than 25,000 people in about 60 towns were affected by the heavy rains that caused landslides and floods.
For his part, Walney Barreros, Minister of Civil Defense in the state, said that more than 300 mm of rain fell in the state during the past 24 hours.
