New York ∙ Hurricane Ian struck the southwestern coast of the US state of Florida, causing extensive damage. From Englewood to Bonita Beach, over 2.5 million people have been affected.
The electrical and telephone connections were completely cut off due to rain and wind. Many homes have been inundated by waves about 10 feet high. Most of the streets were under water. The only bridge on Sanibel Island has collapsed. Flight services are also suspended. States of emergency have also been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia due to warnings that the hurricane could escalate again.
