Hungary built barbed wire fences against migrants. The refugees now live in Budapest’s best hotels.

BUDAPEST (Aftenposten): The bar is open, the breakfast buffet is inviting and along the sofa groups in the reception area there is a fire on the fireplace. But the guests of this hotel are not here to enjoy themselves.

Diana fled with four children: Vlad (16), Bagdan (14), Ilya (7) and Yarik (5). The children’s father, Vladislav, is back in Kyiv. They have not heard from him since they left. He’s in the military. Ilya is not in the picture.

They barely notice the beautiful surroundings. Many sit in low-key conversations in the sofa groups. Others are constantly in the cell phone. Some look apathetic in the air.

In the breakfast room, Diana tries to make breakfast as enjoyable as possible for her four children.

But the mother’s thoughts are in Kyiv, where the man and the children’s father, Vladislav, are left.

They have not heard from him since they left. He’s in the military.

Diana comforts her son Yarik (5). She herself has not heard from Yarik’s dad since they left Kyiv last week.

– We are fine here, but I have no idea where we are going. I have no money, she says.

The only thing that reminds me of a little normality in the hotel are the children who run between the tables, draw or play on the iPad.

But then the Ukrainian refugees have not come to Budapest to enjoy the city or visit the tourist attractions.

Then it is at least a consolation that the Hungarians are now doing everything in their power to comfort and help.

This was not the last time refugees fled to Hungary during the migrant war in 2015.
