Hungary Blocks EU Financial Aid to Ukraine, Russia Congratulates

Russia congratulated Hungary on blocking EU financial aid to Ukraine at a summit in Brussels.

“Hungary, unlike many European countries, firmly defends its interests, which impresses us,” Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has vetoed the European Union’s allocation of 50 billion euros over four years to Ukraine as the country battles the Russian army.

However, on November 14, when EU leaders discussed opening accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, Orbán agreed to leave the room so his colleagues could approve the plan by consensus and avoid a Hungarian veto.

Moscow condemned the move.

“This is an absolutely politicized decision – the EU’s desire to show support to these countries in this way. But certainly such new members can actually destabilize the EU,” said Peskov.

He added that Brussels intends to turn Eastern European countries against Moscow.

“Everything is being done to irritate Russia and to antagonize these countries vis-à-vis Russia,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Orban, in an interview with Hungarian state radio, linked the planned EU money for Ukraine to tens of billions of euros that Brussels has frozen for Hungary because of a retreat from democracy and corruption concerns.

“This is a great opportunity for Hungary to show clearly that it should get what it deserves. We want to be treated fairly and now there is a great chance to confirm it,” noted the Hungarian Prime Minister. /BGNES
