Details: Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has been stalling Sweden’s bid to join the alliance since July 2022, arguing that Swedish politicians are telling “outright lies” about the state of democracy in Hungary.

According to opposition MP Agnes Vadai, on Tuesday Hungarian MPs blocked proposal for appointment vote on ratification of the Swedish application.

The next possible time to vote will be during the parliamentary session, which begins Nov. 6, she said.

Hungarian officials have repeatedly said their country would not be the last member to back Sweden’s bid.

Hungary and Turkey’s delays frustrated other NATO allies, who quickly agreed to admit Sweden and Finland into the alliance after the neighboring countries abandoned their decades-long military neutrality.

Let us remind you:

On October 23, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after months of delayingsent to parliament countries for ratification of the protocol on Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş said that the parliament may soon consider approving Sweden’s application. According to Bloomberg, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wants Sweden to become a member of the Alliance no later than the ministerial meeting NATO Foreign Affairs, scheduled for November 28-29.
