Hungarian government wants to prohibit adoption for gay couples in constitution

Hungary’s government wants to state in its constitution that only married couples can adopt children. In fact, this amounts to an adoption ban for same-sex partners, because in Hungary marriage is only possible between a man and a woman. In the proposal, singles can only adopt a child with the consent of the Minister for Family Affairs.

In addition, an amendment to the constitution submitted to parliament at the same time states that children should be raised with the “Christian” conception of male and female roles.

Prime Minister Orbán’s conservative government says the bills are intended to strengthen children’s rights in adoption.

Not coincidentally

According to the largest LGBTI interest group in Hungary, it is no coincidence that the government is coming up with the proposal right now. Today, strict corona measures are in effect in Hungary. “The proposals are being submitted at a time when demonstrations are not allowed,” said the Hatter Society.

There is probably also a connection with next year’s elections. Since the beginning of the corona crisis, in the spring, the government has turned against the LGBTI community. In May it became impossible to change someone’s gender in official documents.

Prime Minister Orbán’s Fidesz party is related to the Polish ruling party PiS. He also conducts in elections campaign with homophobic views.
