Hundreds of young Americans die from the corona virus – why is being researched

Why has it affected a relatively large number of young people in the United States so far?

While in Europe mostly older people and those with (at least) a previous disease die from the coronavirus, more young people have also been hit in the USA. It is not yet clear why.

(fox) Conrad Buchanan died in Florida of 39 of Covid-19 lung disease. He is one of at least 759 people under the age of 50 who succumbed to the disease in the United States, according to the Washington Post. “My husband didn’t have diabetes, asthma or anything. He had nothing, »Nicole Buchanan told the newspaper.

This means that the number of under-50s who died from the virus is significantly higher than in European countries. In Italy, for example, on April 6, it was only around 1.1 percent.

Also in the US, the younger, the less death there is from Covid-19. Age groups are not reported accurately from all countries, which is why the number of unreported cases could be higher.

But what is striking: In the state of New York, a lot of younger people are affected by the disease. For example, around 25 percent of over 1,400 hospitalized people on Wednesday were under 50 – however, most suffered from a pre-existing condition such as asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure.

Shawn Evans, rescue director at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, told the Washington Post: “Compared to other countries, this is significantly more than expected.” He explained that around half of the people in the intensive care unit are under 50.

Still, Evans can’t see a pattern. It could affect anyone from 30-year-old triathletes to 45-year-old couch potato. The important thing is simple: “Even the boys are not simply immune.”

Now you want to find out why the disease can also be difficult for people from the non-risk group. This is exactly what Jean-Laurent Casanova is studying for Rockefeller University Hospital. “First we have to understand why, then we have to see whether we can prevent the outbreak.”

A look at the death statistics for Covid-19 in New York City does not provide any information. Although a large proportion suffered from previous illnesses, it is not yet clear why so many are affected under the age of 65.
