Hubble Telescope Captures Galaxy Like A Ship In The Wind

The constellation Vela has an interesting and nautical-related history, as the Hubble scientists explain in a NASA statement.

“Vela was originally part of a much larger constellation, known as Argo Navis after the fabled ship Argo from Greek mythology. The Argo Navis is divided into three separate sections called Carina, Puppis, and Vela—each named after a section of the Argo. As befits a galaxy in an ocean-inspired constellation, the outer edge of NGC 3318 almost resembles a ship’s sails blowing in a light breeze,” NASA said in a statement. The Hubble Space Telescope is over 30 years old. The telescope continues to be an invaluable tool both for astronomical research and for sharing space images.

The telescope recently passed the impressive milestone of having been operating for a billion seconds. During that time, telescopes have revealed important information about the expansion of the universe as well as imaging targets both far away and in our own solar system.
