Hubble has crashed and NASA has to restore one of the telescope’s computers

At home, with the click of a button we restore the computer when it has a problem. However, the machine here is NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope which is 547 kilometers from Earth. The space equipment stopped working last Sunday, June 13th.

According to NASA, for this telescope to work again it is necessary to restore one of its computers.

Hubble computer needs to be restored

Hubble has been in orbit since 1990. After experiencing myopia problems, shortly after it was launched, it was repeatedly “repaired and upgraded”.

Now, since last June 13th, the main computer has stopped receiving signals from the payload computer. The operations team believes the problem is the degradation of one of the memory modules.

Fortunately, there are other memory modules for replacement, and the team is working to make the migration.

DF-224 computer manufactured by Rockwell Autonetics in 1980 and installed at Hubble.

as is referred to in history from Hubble, the original computer uses technology developed in the 1980s. In 2009, a new one was installed to modernize the telescope.

This computer is responsible for coordinating and controlling Hubble's scientific instruments and overseeing the condition and safety of these modules.

Hubble is expected to continue to reap impressive scientific discoveries until the end of the 2020s or beyond.

I told Space.com the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center team.

Telescope is still one of the most important in the study of space

Although they already have an idea of how to operate the maintenance now needed, the team has a caveat: there is still no forecast on how long it will take to complete the repair, run new tests and get the telescope up and running again.

Even after three decades of discovering the universe, Hubble remains critical to space science.

Hubble captured this image of a giant red nebula and a neighboring smaller blue nebula to commemorate its 30th anniversary in April 2020.

One of the most recent discoveries made with telescope data, for example, was that some galaxies have less dark matter than predicted. Were also achieved with this equipment amazing images of Jupiter.
